Why Moving Well After 35 Is the Most Important Fitness Decision You’ll Make
If you’re over 35 and the way you used to train doesn’t feel right anymore, you’re not alone, and you’re not too old. The problem isn’t your age. It’s that most training was never designed for how your body actually works at this stage of life. At Move Method, a boutique personal training and small-group studio at 503 Balmain Road in Lilyfield, we’ve spent over 20 years helping adults build bodies that move well, stay out of pain, and keep performing for decades ahead. This post explains exactly how we do it, and what’s different about our approach.
From a Kitchen in Newcastle to a Studio in Lilyfield
I didn’t start in fitness. I started as a chef.
After moving from Newcastle to Sydney to refine my career, I realised fairly quickly that long hours in a kitchen wasn’t the life I wanted. What I kept coming back to was movement. As a former competitive gymnast, I’d spent years chasing new challenges, new ways to load the body, new skills to develop, new ways to fail and try again. That curiosity never left.
So I completed my Personal Training studies, worked in some of Sydney’s biggest gym chains, and slowly discovered a way of training that blended gymnastics, strength training, Animal Flow, ViPR, movement-based programming, and rehab work into something that didn’t have a name yet. From that, Move Method was born, in 2014, in Lilyfield’s Inner West.
Today, I run the studio alongside Kieran Geeves, our PT and boxing coach, and we work closely with chiropractors, physiotherapists, and allied health professionals to support clients of all ages and abilities. The clients we see most consistently? Adults over 35 who are done with feeling stiff, beaten up, or lost in a gym full of machines they don’t trust.
What Actually Changes in Your Body After 35, and Why Most Gyms Get It Wrong
At 35, 40, or 50, your body hasn’t stopped working. But it has started sending different signals.
Recovery takes longer. Joints that were invisible in your twenties now announce themselves after a heavy session. Posture that was fine with desk work at 25 becomes a visible issue at 40. And the temptation at most gyms, to push harder, go heavier, just grind through it, is exactly the wrong response.
What changes after 35 isn’t your potential. It’s the margin for error.
Most commercial gyms aren’t built around that reality. They’re built for throughput: as many members as possible, doing as many reps as possible, as fast as possible. Nobody is watching whether you’re compensating through one hip. Nobody notices that your shoulder is internally rotated before you press. And nobody is connecting your lower back pain to the way you hinge.
At Move Method, we built the studio specifically around the insight that most adults over 35 don’t need to train harder, they need to train smarter, with someone who actually knows what they’re looking at.
The goal isn’t just fitness. It’s building a body capable of doing what you need it to do for the next 30 years.
What Does “Moving Well” Actually Mean for Adults Over 35?
Moving well isn’t about being flexible, and it isn’t about being strong in isolation. It’s about having both, at the same time, under load, through real ranges of motion.
At Move Method, we look at four things when a new client walks through the door:
Posture and gait, how you stand and how you walk, which tells us a great deal about where your body is compensating
Physical imbalances, the left-right, front-back differences that quietly accumulate over years and eventually become injuries
Joint range of motion, not just whether you can get there, but whether you have strength and control in those positions
Goals in context, not just “lose weight” or “get fit,” but what you actually want to be able to do at 50, 60, and beyond
This is why every new Move Method membership begins with an Initial Movement and Goal Setting Consult. We don’t just hand you a program on day one. We get to know you, your history, and what your body is actually doing before we ask it to do more.
Moving well means your body can handle what life throws at it, not just what a program prescribes on a Tuesday morning.
How Does the Move Method Approach Work? The Six-Stage Journey
We built our Foundation Program around six stages that take a client from wherever they are right now to a body that moves with confidence, control, and resilience. Each stage builds on the last.
Stage 1, Initial Assessment
We look at goal setting, day-to-day posture, gait, physical imbalances, and nutrition. This isn’t a generic form, it’s a real conversation that shapes everything that follows.
Stage 2, Foundation Training
Over the next four weeks, we build fundamentals. Technique is everything here. We identify imbalances and start correcting them before they become habits baked into a heavier program.
Stage 3, Skilful Strength
Once the foundation is solid, we move into the enjoyable territory, gymnastics, bodyweight exercises, and hand balancing. These aren’t just party tricks. They reveal weaknesses that traditional gym training hides, and they build strength that transfers.
Stage 4, Weightlifting
We build powerlifting strength, working on strong, powerful movements using everything we have in the studio. By this stage, clients have the technique to load safely and the body awareness to know when something is off.
Stage 5, Rehab and Prehab
Injury prevention is not an afterthought at Move Method, it’s a priority. We work on rehab and prehab exercises specific to each person’s weaknesses. This is what keeps people training consistently for years, not months.
Stage 6, Mobility
Joint care and flexibility are embedded throughout everything we do. Our dedicated Mobility work builds strength at the end ranges of joint motion, not just passive stretching, but loaded flexibility that lasts.
This six-stage structure is what separates Move Method from a class-based gym where you drop in, sweat, and leave. Every client follows a planned path.
What Classes Are Available at Move Method, and Which One Is Right for You?
The class timetable at Move Method is built around our movement philosophy. Every session has a purpose, and each one fits into the broader approach of building strong, capable, resilient bodies.
Here’s what we offer:
Move, One of our favourites. This class builds strength in challenging positions the body needs to adapt to and control. Your heart rate goes up, you move in unfamiliar ways, and you have fun doing it.
Strength & Move, Built around your specific program, not a generic workout. You work on your imbalances rather than defaulting to what you already know and like. It’s self-directed, challenging, and efficient.
Mobility, Not a passive stretch class. We build strength at joint end ranges, improve flexibility with control, and load tissues to develop both length and resilience. Perfect if injury prevention and long-term movement quality matter to you.
Build (Upper and Lower Body), The fundamentals of strength. These classes keep you working on the movements that matter most as we age, the ones that make everyday life easier and more capable.
Sprints, Saturday mornings, outdoors, wind in your hair. This class teaches running fundamentals and builds cardio fitness through HIIT. Never run before? That’s fine. This class is for everyone.
Adult Boxing, Coached by Kieran Geeves. This is about learning the art of boxing, footwork, pad work, partner drills. Precision, rhythm, and real skill development, not just cardio.
Skills (Beginner, Gymnastics, and Hand Balancing), Three levels, from someone who has never touched a gymnastics movement to handstands, frog balances, and beyond.
Kids Boxing, Coached by Kieran, for children aged 8–14, every Thursday at 4pm. Coordination, confidence, and foundational movement patterns that set kids up for any sport or physical activity.
What Role Does Prehab and Injury Prevention Play at Move Method?
This question comes up constantly from new clients, and the answer matters.
Most gym programs are built around what you can do right now. Prehab and rehab work is built around what you need to keep doing for the next decade. At Move Method, we take injury prevention seriously because we’ve seen what happens when it’s left out, clients who were making great progress get sidelined by something that was entirely predictable and preventable.
Our approach to prehab is personal. We identify your specific physical weaknesses during the initial assessment and build targeted exercises around them. If your left hip is less stable than your right, we address it before it becomes the thing that stops you training.
Alan works directly with chiropractors, physiotherapists, and allied health professionals to ensure that clients dealing with existing injuries or chronic pain get programming that supports their recovery, not one that works against it.
If you want to explore this further, our Fix Your Back program and Gymnastics Rings Strength Training resource are good starting points, both are built around the idea that the body performs best when it’s structurally sound.
At Move Method, prehab isn’t a session you add on, it’s woven into every program from day one.
What Makes a Boutique Studio in Lilyfield Different from a Regular Gym?
It comes down to attention.
In a big gym with hundreds of members, nobody is watching your hip position during a hinge. Nobody notices that you’re compensating through your lower back because your posterior chain isn’t firing correctly. Nobody adjusts your program when your shoulder starts to talk back. You’re on your own.
At Move Method, we’re a small studio by design. Our classes are small groups, which means coaches can see you, actually see you, and adjust what you’re doing in real time. Alan has 20 years of experience. Kieran has six and a half years working with hundreds of clients across boxing, strength, mobility, gymnastics rings, and handstand training. Between them, they bring a depth of coaching that simply doesn’t scale to a room of 50 people.
We’re also located in the heart of Sydney’s Inner West, serving clients from Lilyfield, Rozelle, Balmain, and Leichhardt, and we’ve been part of this community since 2014. That longevity isn’t an accident. It reflects what happens when people get real results and keep coming back.
Our memberships include everything a new client needs: the initial movement consult, nutrition coaching, and ongoing movement support. There’s no guessing about what to do next, the program is yours, and someone is accountable for it.
How Do I Know If Move Method Is Right for Me?
Move Method was built for adults who are serious about moving well for the long term, not for people looking for the cheapest gym or the most classes per week.
You’re likely a good fit if:
You’re 35 or older and feel like your body deserves better training than you’ve been giving it
You’ve had injuries in the past and want to train around them, not through them
You want to build real strength, not just lose weight, or both
You care about technique and want to understand why you’re doing what you’re doing
You want a coach who knows your name, your history, and your specific imbalances
If you’re not sure, the easiest way to find out is to try it. Move Method offers a 2-week trial, two weeks of training at the studio, no long-term commitment required. It’s the best way to experience the coaching, the classes, and the community before deciding if it’s the right fit.
You can also watch Alan and the team in action on YouTube or follow the studio on Instagram to get a feel for the culture before you walk in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Move Method suitable for complete beginners?
A: Yes. Every new client starts with an initial assessment, and the Foundation Training stage is designed specifically to build correct technique and address imbalances before adding load or complexity. You don’t need any prior experience to start.
Q: How is Move Method different from a Pilates studio or a CrossFit gym?
A: Move Method draws from gymnastics, strength training, mobility work, boxing, and movement-based programming. It’s not a single-method studio. The program is built around you, your assessment, your imbalances, your goals, rather than a one-size class model.
Q: Do I need to commit to a long-term membership straight away?
A: No. Move Method offers a two-week introductory option that lets you experience the classes, the coaching, and the community before you decide. It’s the right way to start.
Q: What if I have an existing injury or chronic pain?
A: Alan works alongside chiropractors, physiotherapists, and allied health professionals to support clients with existing injuries. The initial assessment will flag your specific needs, and your program will be built around them, not in spite of them.
Q: How do I get started?
A: Contact Alan directly, call 0404 477 088, or enquire online. You can also view the class timetable and our full range of classes before reaching out.
